Stamford, CT. - May 5, 2008 - Fujifilm Medical Systems USA, in collaboration with The National Breast Cancer Foundation (NBCF), announced today donations of its Fuji Computed Radiography for Mammography (FCRm) system to Howard University Hospital, in Washington, D.C., and the Nancy Reagan Breast Center in Simi Valley, California. The donations mark the first installation of full field digital mammography technology at each facility.
Both donations were made as part of Images of Health: Mammograms for a Million Moms, Fujifilm’s national breast cancer awareness and education program in conjunction with the NBCF. The goal of the program, launched in October 2006, is to spread the message of the importance of mammography in the early detection of breast cancer, and encourage 1,000,000 more women to get the life-saving screening. “Fujifilm is proud to be spearheading this effort to bring digital mammography technology to more women in the U.S.,” said Randy Nagel, Director of Corporate Communications for Fujifilm Medical Systems USA. “The ultimate goal is to make sure that women and their families are aware of the importance of annual mammograms, and to help bring to them the best diagnostic technology available.” Howard University Hospital, the only African-American academic and comprehensive health care center in the country, recognized the donation with a press conference on Friday, April 18. In addition to Fujifilm’s computed radiology for mammography (FCRm) system , the NBCF donated $50,000 to the facility to provide free mammograms for women in the D.C. community. Recipients of the “big check” were members of Howard’s Radiology Department and Larry Warren, Howard University Hospital’s President and CEO. The hospital plans to use the funds to offer free mammograms to women in the community beginning late spring or early summer. On Friday, April 25, Simi Valley Hospital recognized Fujifilm’s donation to the Nancy Reagan Breast Center during its annual “Hats Off to Women!” event at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and Museum in Simi Valley. Participants enjoyed a private luncheon, silent auction, free health screenings, fashion show and presentation of the “Simi Valley Woman of the Year” award. Janelle Hail, Founder and President of the National Breast Cancer Foundation, was honored for her efforts in spearheading national breast cancer awareness initiatives to women of all ages and providing free mammograms to women in need. In observance of Breast Caner Awareness Month (October) last year, the NBCF donated $50,000 to fund mammography screenings for uninsured women at the Nancy Reagan Breast Center. “Annual mammograms are still the best way to detect breast cancer in its earliest stages, when it is most treatable,” said Hail, a breast cancer survivor of 26 years. “We are thrilled to be partnering with Fujifilm and commend them for their commitment to and hands-on involvement in supporting the breast cancer cause. This generous donation of Fujifilm’s technology will no doubt make an enormous difference in patient care and outcomes.” Central to the Images of Health: Mammograms for a Million Moms campaign is an informative and interactive Web site, www.imagesofhealth.com, where women – or friends and family members – can pledge to get a mammogram, and find a certified facility near them. Together with the NBCF, Fujifilm also works to provide free mammograms to underserved women. About FUJIFILM Medical Systems USA, Inc.
