My Story
Stephanie

Where do I start? Breast cancer and cancer in general has hurt my family in so many ways. My aunt was diagnosed with breast cancer 20 years ago and had to have a double mastectomy, 5 years later, her youngest daughter (my cousin) was diagnosed with breast cancer as well and also had a double mastectomy, two years after that her sister (another cousin) was diagnosed and within 6 months their other sister had it as well. All 4 of them have had double mastectomys and reconstructive surgery, but are ALL living today because of early detection. As soon as my aunt got it, all of my cousins were being tested for it regulary, and also doing self checks. My family had already been through pain and heartache when my aunts son killed himself during her treatment for cancer, and after all the daughters were diagnosed, their father, my uncle was diagnosed with bone marrow cancer and died. All they have left now is each other and their children. A couple of their daughters have elected to have double mastectomys to avoid the risk of even getting breast cancer. This is how breast cancer has touched my family. Early detection and awareness has literally saved their lives. They walk for a cure every year and their team name is "small town tata's". I wish I had the picture of all of them with their pink ribbon shirts on the share but I don't. Thanks for giving the opportunity to share my family story.
