Two years ago in June I was having a physical in order to volunteer at an Orphanage in Peru. After having all my travel shots and documentation taken care of in the months prior, it was my final step. My doctor found the lump and arranged immediately for a mammogram.(Thankfully, this was the first time in my life that I have had insurance) When the mammogram was viewed I was scheduled the next day for a biopsy. They called shortly after to let me know that I would need surgery. I opted for the least invasive procedure and they removed the lump and three lymph nodes. Thankfully the cancer was stage 1. I had radiation treatments five days a week for three months. I was extremely fortunate and was able to work my full time job as a preschool teacher. (although it was exhausting!) Without our insurance and the fact that my husband is well paid, I don't know how we could have afforded the medical costs. I have participated in The race for the Cure and Romp to Stomp for years prior to my own diagnosis and of course ever since. I will be at two years on my birthday November 14th. Three more to go! I try to maintain a healthy lifestyle and remember the gratitude I felt upon learning that my survival rate was 98%. "I would maintain that thanks are the highest form of thought; and that gratitude is happiness doubled by wonder." ~G.K. Chesterton
